Morning Reading: Mo’ “Monk” Mo’ “Monk” Mo’ “Monk”

First of all, I hope you read last night’s hi-larious and right-on "American Idol" liveblog by our man Aaron. More entertaining than "Idol" itself, actually, and setting a high bar for me to clear tonight. But assuming you’ve done that, here’s some more fodder to consume with your java:

"Monk" with Tony Shalhoub (right) gets a seventh season, to bow this summer. (Hollywood Reporter)
The 18-49 demographic beloved by advertisers loved "Knight Rider." Sigh. (TV Decoder)
"The Amazing Race" and "Numb3rs" are among the pickups announced by CBS yesterday for the fall. (Buddy TV)
Finale "Nip/Sucked." (TV Guide)
Loving this season’s "Lost." (Tifaux)

Morning Reading: Writers Strike And More

Feast your eyes on the image of Randy Jackson and Renaldo Lapuz, one of the "American Idol" loons from last night, while you enjoy these morning links:

AP updates the networks’ stock of new shows at this point in the strike. (AP)

Barnhart has a long and substantive interview with Shawn Ryan, creator
of "The Shield" and a member of the Writers Guild negotiating team. And
he takes issue with some of those numbers. (TV Barn)
The WGA gets ready to make reality an issue. (Scribe Vibe)
Matt Roush says it’s "Nip/Tuck" that needs reconstructive surgery these days. (TV Guide)
Chris Daughtry has backed off his comments dissing "Idol." Taken out of context, blah blah blah. (Page Six)
A closer look at "Lipstick Jungle." I’m having a hard time caring, myself. (Televisionista)
First look at Brian Austin Green on "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles." (TV Addict)

Gays On Film: Portia di Rossi And Cat Cora

Did you know that "Iron Chef America" star Cat Cora was gay? Me neither. Anyway, she and her partner and their two sons, Caje, 4 and Zoran, 6, share a recipe for Thanksgiving sweet potato casserole with People this week, and Celebrity Baby Blog has a scan of it. Zoran likes marshmallows.
Also: Portia di Rossi found it much harder to film the torrid gay tove scenes in "Nip/Tuck" than did her heterosexual co-star, Joely Richardson. Apparently she really doesn’t like doing makeout scenes at all.

Can’t Get Enough “Nip/Tuck?” Go Backstage…

Young Hollywood went backstage and interviewed the cast of "Nip/Tuck." The interviewers are very bubbly and enthusiastic, which is difficult for me to handle before noon, but they do have some good questions for the cast. Highlights: Julian McMahon says that after filming a season, he’s sick of being a single character, especially someone like Sean McNamara. My favorite bit, though, is talking to Kelly Carlson, who plays Kimber. She says that this season, Kimber is going to get into "drugs and porn." To prepare for the role, she says she spoke with addicts and "did a lot of research on the internet." Research. That’s what they’re calling it these days, eh?

“Nip/Tuck” Shows Off L.A.’s Newest Implants

OK, the implants line is from their ad, but it’s a good one. And the season five premiere of "Nip/Tuck" on FX Tuesday night at 10 is a good one too, maintaining the queasy kink of four years in Miami, alternately hilarious and horrifying.
Plastic surgeons Sean (Dylan Walsh) and Christian (Julian McMahon) have relocated to Los Angeles after their last round of Miami nightmares, thinking that Tinsel Town ought to be promised land for a couple of guys in their line of work. But as the ep opens, they’re finding it hard to break in, and the payments on their Rodeo Drive office suite and Malibu pad are killing them. So they shower up and head out on the town to do some, uh, personal marketing to all those image-obsessed women out there.
(I think now is the time I have to say SPOILERS AHEAD. Also, smut. The homoerotic chemistry between […]

Just How Meta Can Shows Like “Californication” Get?

The Globe points out that TV is getting awfully postmodern these days: "Californication" now involves the protagonist’s semi-autobiographical novel, which we can only assume will be made into a TV show suspiciously similar to "Californication." And of course "Dexter" has added its own thread of internal debate about a serial killer that mirrors audience debate about Dexter as a person. And the next season of "Nip/Tuck" is about plastic surgeons consulting on a show a lot like "Nip/Tuck." The master of all of these is of course "30+Rock," which is quite literally a TV show about TV shows.
Just how much self-conscious reflection do we really need in our TV? Should I start blogging about blogging about TV that’s about TV?

Morning Links Exchange

Julian McMahon talks about the upcoming season of "Nip/Tuck." (Buddy TV)And is "Nip/Tuck" the new "Love Boat?" Uh, no. (TV Addict)
The Times, of all places, offers a bracingly sardonic assessment of a reaction to a recent tragedy/normal Darwinian interaction on "Meerkat Manor." (NYT)Goodman asks his blog readers which of their favorite shows are going off the rails this season, and "Heroes" and "Friday Night Lights" and "Rescue Me" all come up a lot. Some smartass also complains about the current season of "Veronica Mars." (SFGate)Recap of the third episode of "Reaper," which I haven’t seen yet because I watched "House." (Buddy TV)Myself I lost track of "Damages" a long time ago - no rooting interest - but here’s every twist and turn of this week’s ep. recounted in advance of the season finale. (TV Squad)We’ve mentioned the way DVR ratings have been roiling the waters. Now comes word that the […]

FX Goes, Again, Where No Net Has Gone Before

FX - the home of "Rescue Me" and "The Shield" and "Nip/Tuck" - continues to opt for the most daring cable programming. Variety reports this week that FX has given the green light to "Nip/Tuck" creator Ryan Murphy’s series "4 oz.," about a transsexual man who becomes a woman. No casting yet, although Brad Pitt is among the producers. In a typical "N/T" sort of twist, the character’s profession has changed from sportswriter to gynecologist. Apparently Murphy (right, at press tour in July) hopes to stretch out the character’s transition over four seasons. And I believe the title refers to something he would lose in the process. One can only wonder if the "Nip/Tuck" docs will be involved - it’s just the kind of thing they’d like.
