(Begin pointless personal digression.) I have a soft spot for the semi-annual TV Week Critics Poll. (Read the story here and results here.) Back when the magazine was called Electronic Media, I used to be in the poll all the time, and I started talking to the people over there - we were all in Chicago at the time - and I ended up getting hired as assistant managing editor and getting a whole different look at the industry. While I worked there I ran the poll a couple of times, too, which gave me lots of time to talk to my critic friends who I only got to see on press tour otherwise. So this poll is like an old pal. (End pointless personal digression.)
But seriously, "Pushing Daisies" is better than "Mad Men"??? I don’t think so. Better than "House" or "The Office"?? Really? Uh, no.Ten Best Series1. Pushing […]

December 13th, 2007 — ANTM, Kid Nation
Two reality shows had their finales last night. One was about a bunch of childish, badly behaved brats who were just out for themselves. And the other one was "Kid Nation."

December 12th, 2007 — Kid Nation, gossip girl, Moonlight, Reality TV
Cynthia Littleton at Variety says that "Kid Nation" turned out not to be so evil after all. Sure, we all got worked up about it and about the exploitation of kids, and the decline of Western Civilization, and so forth. But in the end, she says, it’s no big deal. The season finale airs tonight and then all the kids will fade back into quiet obscurity, some of them with a nice bump in their college fund and a note on their resume that can help them get into tony prep schools. Littleton would have us believe that the show has caused no serious problems for the US or for Western Civilization in general.
I disagree. It’s obvious to me that "Kid Nation" has in fact been a key factor in all of the problems the world is currently facing.
After just one season of "Kid Nation," the US Dollar has faded […]

November 5th, 2007 — LA Ink, Kid Nation, Project Runway, The Bachelor, YouTube, Video Top 5
As you all know, Hollywood’s writers are on strike. For the avid television watcher this is probably more stressful than a MLB fan during a baseball lockout. But just think of it this way people. It’s like having summer in November (except for the fact that in most places T-shirts and shorts are out and you’ll freeze your ass off at the beach!). Now you catch all your favorite reruns, just like in the summer. Stay strong and remember, writers are a neurotic and finicky bunch. They need the money way more than the TV execs do meaning the writers will only strike for so long.
This week Video Top 5 is saying forget the writers!! We’ll just give praise to the shows where the hardworking, writing-less, reality shows create all the revenue. On Kid Nation, you can watch the little whiny bastards battle for the gold stars on the two-minute […]

October 12th, 2007 — Kid Nation
The thing about the kids on "Kid Nation" that always gets me is just how insanely accomplished they are. You can see how the eldest one, at fifteen, would know how to do stuff from helping his dad at work during the summer. But look at Taylor. She’s ten years old and she’s already more accomplished than most people will ever be in their entire lives. Not only is she a beauty pageant queen, but she’s totally unafraid to get dirty. And by dirty I mean she’s a cold-blooded killer: CBS posted this picture of her with a deer she bagged.
She looks like she could go from "Kid Nation" to "My Side Of The Mountain" with no trouble at all. Sure mom, I’ll spend a year alone in a hollow tree, taming wild hawks and gathering my own food and curing my own leather. It’ll be fun!
Plus, slaughtering cute, defenseless […]

Here’s a clip from tonight’s “Kid Nation,” in which they begin (in a very mature manner!) a discussion of religious services that they might have in their tiny town. How many kids do you think will bail on church altogether?
