Polly Williams, Eating Disorder Advocate, Dies At 33

Access Hollywood is reporting that Polly Williams, one of the eating disorder patients profiled in the HBO documentary "Thin," died this week at the age of 33. Sources say that the cause of death appeared to be suicide. Since leaving the rehabilitation program where she participated in the documentary, she had been working as a lobbyist for the National Eating Disorders association and practicing photography, but also continued to struggle with eating disorders and depression. Williams was 33.

Can “John From Cincinnati” Catch A Wave On DVD?

One the great television mysteries of 2007 could be solved on March 25, when the complete 10-episode run of HBO’s "John From Cincinnati" hits the DVD market. Two of the episodes are set to arrive with commentary from creator David Milch. Like Marlon Brando in "Apocalypse Now," Milch  became as a god and went crazy in the process. Maybe on those commentary tracks he can tell us what the living hell this show was supposed to be about, with the surfing and the levitation and the resurrection of the parrot and all the rest of it. But then again, maybe not.
"John" was the parting gift Milch received from HBO when the cabler elected not to make any more "Deadwood," and this looks like one of the worst trades in sports history, especially since they haven’t managed to get together on those "Deadwood" wrap-up movies we were promised. And we all […]

Missed this last week, but it look like "Life" could be dead. (TV Decoder)
"The Sopranos" fade to black hasn’t cut into HBO subscriber numbers, contrary to expectations. But I think that just means people are lazy. (Hollywood Reporter)
It took joining the post-apocalyptic series "Jericho" to get this actress watching the news. (Buddy TV)

Weekend TV Reviews: Gandolfini’s Veterans, “Torchwood’s” Aliens, And Hating “Tell Me You Love Me”

Two new series, a new documentary and a returning hit all premiere this weekend.  One is heart-rending and excellent, a must-see. One is pretty damn good. One is torture. And one is Larry David. We’ll take ‘em in  that order.
"Alive Day Memories: Home From Iraq," a documentary bowing Sunday on HBO, looks at the lives of soldiers who were horribly wounded on the battlefield there - fatally so, in any other war. Their Alive Day is the day modern medical care saved them. But now they have to cope with the horrible physical and mental consequences of their survival. Amputations, disfigurement, brutal pain and scorching memories. They tell their stories in their own words, and the show is brilliantly and simply produced with a dark stage and two chairs. Each soldier takes a turn facing actor James Gandolfini, who gently encourages them and asks simple, direct questions. (Gandolfini also produced.) […]

TV That Will Scar You: HBO’s “Alive Day Memories”

The most searing, scarring, difficult, rewarding piece of television you are likely to see anytime soon debuts on HBO Sunday night. "Alive Day Memories: Home From Iraq" is a deceptively simple production. On a darkened stage, young, horribly wounded Army and Marine veterans of the Iraq war sit and talk one-to-one about their experiences to "Sopranos" star James Gandolfini. The actor is often silent, sitting nearly with his back to the camera, saying only as many words as needed, in most cases, to keep the vets talking. But the effect is devastating.
These soldiers were victims of IEDs and other awful weapons. And they all perhaps would have died on the battlefield but for the miracles of combat medicine. The soldiers all know their "Alive Day," the day they didn’t die, as a second birthday. But that does not mean their second lives are easy. Sgt. Bryan Anderson lost both […]

Sex, Sex, Sex? It’s HBO’s “Tell Me You Love Me”

HBO once again raises the bar this weekend - although your family-values conservatives might say they’re lowering it - with Sunday’s debut of "Tell Me You Love Me." There’s some fine acting in this rather uncompromising tale of three couples and their therapist. But what’s most uncompromising here is the explicitness of the frequent sex scenes. No holds barred, literally. Although since a lot of the sex is, um, less than blissful, as is the show itself, it’s hard to accuse HBO of cheap titillation. It was kind of fun, actually, watching executives and the show’s creative team trying to dance that fine line - they take the work seriously, they don’t like having their integrity impugned, but they aren’t going to complain if a bunch of publicity about the sex brings viewers to their show.
Reporters got right down to it at a press conference recently. "So we’re all distracted […]

“Conchords,” “Entourage” To Get New Season

Variety reports that New Zealand’s near-favorite near-celebrities are going to be hanging around in New York for another year: HBO has renewed "Flight Of The Conchords."
This, plus a re-order for "Entourage," means HBO will have at least two solid grownup shows to use as it battles Showtime’s ongoing assault on its market share.

He’s Jemaine, But Not A Jackson

Most Americans still haven’t heard of Jemaine Clement right now, but he has an HBO comedy series getting serious hipster buzz with his buddy in Flight of the Conchords, the surprisingly not Canadian Bret McKenzie. And he’s also in the indie comedy "The Eagle and the Shark." Again, not big news here, but back home in the Conchords’ native New Zealand, he’s bigger news than a fungus on the Sauvignon Blanc vines. Maybe you out to check out this feature from the New Zealand Herald so you can get caught up before the COnchords’ Sept. 2 season finale on HBO.
