Fox Cuts Commercial Time On SciFi Shows

Fox has announced their big plan to revolutionize TV advertising. I don’t know if it will work, but since the big plan involves fewer commercials, I’m for it. In their upfront presentation yesterday, Fox execs announced "Remote-Free TV," a very fancy name for "showing fewer ads." Starting with Joss Whedon’s "Dollhouse" and J.J. Abrams’ "Fringe," the new model will involve showing only 5 minutes of commercials per hour and charging a premium for running your ad in that uncluttered landscape.
Whether it will work is anyone’s guess, but it’s an interesting move. I’d certainly be happier about a little less advertising to fast-forward through, but our friends at TV Squad are already missing their commercials. I also won’t be happy if it comes at the price of more invasive product placement, like "Heroes" (brought to you by the Nissan Versa). Scifi fans will be tearing their hair out over the idea […]

Pilot Season: Busy Weekend For Network Execs

I’ll just keep updating this item I think, because the pilot pickup news is coming fast and furious…

Fox picked up J.J. Abrams "Fringe" and kept "‘Til Death" alive but won’t be going "Back To You" next season.
"New Amsterdam" wasn’t immortal after all.
CW picked up "90210," complete with Jennie Garth, and "Stylista."
CW also picked up a show Nikki Finke calls "This Is Our Money-Grubbing Attempt to Clone Gossip Girls But Not Call It A Spin-Off."
And Nikki sez Tori Spelling might also be in "90210." Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Fox also picked up Joss Whedon’s "Dollhouse."
And the writers strike screwed up the whole process.

“Dollhouse” Doles Out Spoilers, Picks Up Fred

It was inevitable, given the amount of fan interest behind a Joss Whedon project, that every detail of of "Dollhouse" would be leaked, reported and poured over by restless Whedonites who are sick of watching "Once More With Feeling" on DVD over and over. I mean… I assume that’s what they’re doing. I certainly wouldn’t have any first hand knowledge.
Luckily for us, I mean you, E! Online has gotten some juicy details on what will be going on in the pilot episode — be assured, it’s spoilery — and the details look delicious. Without divulging too much for you spoiler avoiding types, I will say that it looks fantastic and dark. It also seems to have plenty of room for the trademark "tiny, slightly crazy girl who can totally kick your ass" character.
Also in the win column, the stunningly gorgeous Amy Acker AKA Fred from "Angel" will be joining the […]

Good Morning, Good Morning

More on CW’s decision to stop streaming "Gossip Girl" comes in this post and this one. The latter suggests it’s all a ploy to whip up interest in the under-watched show. OMFG, really?! (TV By The Numbers)

Maybe it wasn’t gary Dourdan’s idea to leave "CSI" after all. (TV Guide)
Leelee Sobieski: Obviously A Robot. (Glitterati)
I’ve been trying to decide which Robin Sparkles/"HIMYM" post to link to. Let’s try this one. (BuzzSugar)
Some new deets on Joss Whedon’s "Dollhouse." (TV Squad)
Spoilery "Lost" speculation: Could Sawyer be on his way out? (Buddy TV)
Addison’s returning (temporarily) to Seattle Grace and "Grey’s Anatomy." Yawwwwwwn. (Buddy TV)

More On Joss Whedon’s Return

Tim Goodman gives TV Week’s James Hibberd credit for breaking the news that the "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" creator will return to TV with a Fox sci-fi series starring Eliza Dushku, "Dollhouse." And I’ve gotta say Hibberd’s piece is the best of the gazillion I’ve seen on the topic this morning, including this great quote from the prolific Whedon (italics mine): “I wrote a
synopsis, treatment, pilot episode and six suggested future episodes. I
made a poster in PhotoShop because I couldn’t sleep.” Now that’s funny.

Joss Whedon Returns To Save Television

Ok, maybe that’s an overstatement. But the news that the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" auteur is back with a sci fi show called "Dollhouse" and starring Eliza Dushku is just…too…coool. Apparently Dushku - who played Faith on "Buffy" in case you’ve been lobotomized and forgotten - will star as one of a group of human blank slates who can be filled in with any information for their missions, and live in the titular government lab in between. It’s going to air on Fox as early as the spring. (GMMR rounds up the news; E! interviews Joss Whedon)
