February 29th, 2008 — Beauty And The Geek, Reality TV
On the season premiere of the CW’s "Beauty And The Geek" (March 11, kids, set your TiVos), the beauties and the geeks are assigned to go to a bar and collect phone numbers from people. The beauties assume they’ve got the challenge in the bag until they find out they get makeovers beforehand. Makeunders, really, designed to make them look worse than the geeks.
Yes, it’s funny, but it also teaches them an important lesson about how they’ve been able to rely on their looks for a long time, and how to feel a little more sympathy for the geeks. But more importantly, it’s hilarious. It might also win them a Creative Emmy for makeup, because I have no idea how they managed to add twenty pounds to this woman with just some fake acne and an ugly sweater. Maybe it’s just buttoning the shirt up to the neck, de-emphasizing the […]

January 21st, 2008 — Beauty And The Geek
Let your geek flag fly, the president of the Somerville, MA Board of Aldermen has urged young people in his city. He holds David Olsen, the winner of this year’s "Beauty And The Geek" competition, as a role model for the city’s youth.
Be like Dave, and not only will you become a successful wearer of home-made cardboard suits of medieval armor, but you could win tens of thousands of dollars and get a good job doing something with computers or something. And you might even meet a girl or two at some point in your life. And she might talk to you or say you’re nice! Alderman Dennis Sullivan says, "David is the anti-Britney Spears." I think that means that he’s a good role model.
But really, how different from Britney is he? They’re both known for prancing around in silly outfits and for having romantic misadventures. Admittedly, David’s […]

December 4th, 2007 — Beauty And The Geek
The two geeks left in "Beauty And The Geek" both hail from Somerville, just across the river from Boston, MA, and the local blogs are all atwitter to learn tonight just which one is going to win. Bostonist will even be liveblogging the show. That’s good, because after last week’s ripoff non-ending, I’m furious with "BATG" and I want to be able to fast-forward through all the recapping and soft-focus emotional interviews that are sure to plague the reunion-centric finale.
No, I’m not furious enough to stop enjoying all the speculation about whether Nicole is a lesbian (I doubt it, but have no evidence one way or another) or to stop wondering if DateDavid.org has gotten Dave a date (not likely). I guess I’m less interested in the beauties. Will Jasmine ever fulfill her dream of selling real estate? Will she ever have a more interesting ambition? Will Sam […]

November 27th, 2007 — Beauty And The Geek
Maybe the highlight of tonight’s "Beauty And The Geek" was when Jasmine mispronounced "familiarity" as "flamilularity," and maybe it was when Sam demonstrated his cheezy dance moves for Nicole and his buddies back at his hometown bar. Either way, the show was fifteen minutes of content stretched out to an hour. Worse, after all the going to meet each other’s families, after all the soft-focus recap, we find out tonight isn’t the last: America’s going to vote on who wins. There are no other spoilers and no challenges.
Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn who wins. I’m certainly beginning to hope I never hear the words "final elimination" or "elimination room" ever again. They’re starting to sound like the kinds of phrases David would use to talk about going to the bathroom.
Sam’s still a jackass who talks like every kid who ever beat me up in middle school, David’s […]

November 27th, 2007 — Beauty And The Geek
Jennifer is 26 and from Boston. William is 25 and from Raleigh. Both of them wait tables for money, although Jennifer is a beautiful woman who has "blonde moments," while William is a shy, sports-fearing geekmaster. They were the 8th team eliminated on "Beauty And The Geek" this year, and Reality TV World has an in-depth interview with them about how they found the show and what they’re up to now.
Despite the fact that they didn’t get along and never won any challenges, they managed to make it far longer than anyone expected, placing third. Impressive, but not impressive enough. There’s no third-place prize on this show - although Jen has managed to score a role as an extra in "Bachelor No. 2" and a modeling gig or two for a vodka commercial.
Tonight on "Beauty And The Geek," the remaining two teams travel to see where their teammates come from. […]

November 20th, 2007 — Beauty And The Geek
This week on "Beauty And The Geek," William and Jen are the team that will not die! So many times, they’ve escaped because people thought they were a weaker team. Now, they’re actually emerging as a threat - assuming they can actually cooperate. Especially this week, because it’s an explicitly cooperative challenge.
Frankly, William may be replacing Sam as my least-favorite contestant on this show. He’s a whiny child. He doesn’t like wine. He insists on pronouncing the "t" in Cabernet. He refuses to admit he’s wrong - about everything.
This week, there are three teams left, and we find that Dave has a huge crush on Nicole. According to datedavid.org, he lives in Somerville, right near where Nicole studies musicology, so it could totally work. Also according to datedavid.org, he’s still single, so it hasn’t worked out.
Random detail: William, in his various confessional moments, is wearing the same Dark Horse […]

Are you a nice girl? Do you like nerdy boys? Do you like live-action role-playing or the Society for Creative Anachronism? If so, you could win a date with David from "Beauty And The Geek." I guess it helps if you live near him, which is to say, the greater Boston area. His so-called friends have set up a website aimed at getting the recent makeover victim and reality TV star a date. It’s called Date David. There’s even an application form which allows you to check off reasons you might want to date him, such as "I am very worried about communicable diseases, and will only
date virgins."

November 13th, 2007 — Beauty And The Geek
This week on "Beauty And The Geek" the geek challenge is flair bartending and the beauty challenge is zoology with an emphasis on creepy-crawlies. Anyone else think the beauty challenge favors Sam again? Yeah, I thought so.
Will and Jen also are still fighting, mostly because Will is still a pissy little bitch. Nicole’s instinct is to help Will learn to appreciate and cooperate with Jen, and she worries that they made the wrong decision last week by keeping them. I have to disagree. It’s totally the right decision, because they’re unable to cooperate and are therefore the easiest opponents to beat. Keep ‘em til the end.
Anyway, after some studying and bickering, we head to the beauty challenge. It takes place in a cave, where Shay gets the best line of the week: "Walking up to the cave, I thought I was about to see some elephants, some horses or something, […]
