ANTM, Meet CNTM

We all know that there are plenty of international versions of "Americas Next Top Model." Some show promise of continuing for as long as the original, while others have splintered into their own, even more local versions: "Scandinavia’s Next Top Model" was canceled after 3 seasons when Norwegian and Finnish networks began production of their own versions of the show.

But I think the most interesting development is the just-completed Chinese edition of the show. China isn’t known for wanting unpredictable or vulgar material, particularly not sexy, gossipy, scantily-clad models, on its airwaves. But just as the world loves Chinese manufactured products, so China loves foreign entertainment - especially when adjusted slightly for local tastes. Expect more clothing and less trash-talking on "China’s Next Top Model," and emphasis on hard work and family values as well as beauty and the ability to sell product.

The theme song, of course, gets no adaptation, […]

Spoiler Warning: My Predictions For This Week’s Shows

I don’t have insider confirmation about the following stories, but I’m pretty confident in my powers of prediction and guesstimation. Beware my spoilers! They have more spoilage than day-old meat in the back of a Japanese dekotora (at left)!
On Tuesday, "American Idol"
contestants will be singing Dolly Parton songs. Despite country being
her natural genre, horsey girl Kristy Lee Cook will screw up badly.

The other week, Gordon Ramsay told us that he doesn’t enjoy swearing and that he can stop at any time. He’ll prove it tomorrow night on the season premiere of "Hell’s Kitchen,"
which will feature no rage or anger at all. He’s turned over a
completely new leaf and will gently correct any mistakes he sees in the
kitchens of his new proteges.

On "Top Model"
this week, the girls do go-sees - that is, client visits. At least one
of them is going to get horribly lost, show up late, and blame a […]

“ANTM:” Can We Just Agree You’re All Crazy Bitches?

Oh! My! God! Tonight On "ANTM," Dominique is horrible! Dominique doesn’t know how to set an alarm clock! Everybody hates Dominique! Not that any of the other models are going to win Miss Congeniality, but she’s obviously the designated crazy one this season. No, nobody else is out to get you. They just think you’re an inconsiderate bitch. There’s a difference. Lauren, who has so far seemed balanced and human, thinks Dominique is irritating. If Lauren thinks she’s horrible, I agree.
Frankly, I think Dominique (left, in last week’s picture) is horrible anyway.
Challenge One: Learn to handle the pause-and-pose at the end of the runway, which is the prime photography spot. One secret is to pretend like you’re in pain. "Oh my god, my weave tracks are killing me." Well, maybe you shouldn’t have a stupid weave, girl.
Most of the models do OK, but Lauren’s still way way off. Dammit, she’s […]

Will Tyra Keep Hosting “Top Model?”

Tyra Banks is reportedly tired of hosting "America’s Next Top Model" and trying to think of someone else to run the show for her. Of course, not just anyone could provide Tyra’s sassy charisma. Also, the concept for the show is getting kind of tired these days. And then there’s the matter of Niki Taylor and Tyson Beckford hosting "Make Me A Supermodel," making things more challenging still for anyone who tries to fill Tyra’s shoes.
Of course, Miss J. Alexander could do it, but is America ready for a mainstream reality show hosted by a drag queen? I mean, a queen aside from Tyra. Sure, J. is America’s favorite transvestite, but the CW still might find it a little risky to put her in a starring role rather than leaving her as the fab sidekick.
One commenter on the LiveJournal gossip community Oh No They Didn’t had a particularly good suggestion: […]

“ANTM:” What Happened To Last Year’s Eco-Theme?

Last year - excuse me, cycle - "ANTM" was all ecological. They had that biodiesel bus and everything. This year they’re back to a stretch hummer. Instead of recycled materials they posed last week with meat. Whatever. This week is the Benny Ninja posing lesson.
Benny Ninja (left) pretty much invented the whole vogue posing thing, so he’s the obvious choice to teach the ladies about how to contort their bodies in various commercially acceptable ways.
It’s also the week where Dominique - already irritating everyone by talking about herself in the third person - takes shit too far. Miffed at not being reminded that it was her turn for the phone, she freaks out at Whitney and calls her racist. I don’t know or care what Dominique’s ethnicity is: She’s a stone-cold nutjob. Yay, drama.
On to the challenge and spoilers, after the jump.

A pose-off in front of a grafitti […]

Never Rent To Tyra Banks

The New York Post says that Tyra Banks and "ANTM" trashed the hell out of the loft they rented for the show. Well, obviously. Or should I say "obvs?"

“ANTM” Vs. “Make Me A Supermodel:” Who’s Got The Better Theme Song?

Tyra’s "Wanna Be On Top" is the theme for "ANTM," while "Make Me A Supermodel" gets an electro-synth cover of Queen’s hit "I Want It All." Which do you like better? And are you disappointed or relieved that Janet Jackson’s "Feedback," with its chorus of  "Do you like my style? (Sexy sexy) hasn’t yet become a reality show theme song?

First, here’s the “ANTM” song:

And here’s the “Supermodel” song:

“ANTM” Dumbass Regrets Racist Dumbassery

Allison, axed on last week’s episode "America’s Next Top Model," says she sincerely regrets the way she insulted Fatima. It’s not that she’s racist, it’s just that her feelings were so hurt and she was so mad that she said things without thinking. She told E! Online "It was very immature, and I’m kind of disgusted with myself."
Well, she’s come up with an acceptable apology, but I’m still kind of disgusted with her anyway.
Of course, it wasn’t the in-house drama and insults that got Allison got booted from the show. Hell, the show’s producers love that kind of crap. Fortunately for justice and my sanity, Allison also produced over-studied, awkward poses for the photographers. Since she’s both a poor model and a poor role model, I’m glad to see her off the air, even if it does mean at least one more week of Dominique’s combination of soccer mom […]

“ANTM” Judging Produces Justice?

I knew last night’s last night’s "ANTM" was going to be fun, because the makeover episode is always fun. But the drama and comeuppance were wholly unexpected bonuses.
First off, let’s look at the most successful makeover: Marvita (left). She looked great beforehand, of course, but the addition of longer hair to her mohawk turned her from a wild child to a performance artist. The others were fine, of course, and Fatima got the most remarkable change, to a hair color that really suits her and brings her from exotic beauty to exotic, impossible beauty. The least successful was probably Whitney, who ended up with Ashley Judd’s hair.
But let’s get to the drama. The drama was the best part. Of course, it involved Fatima, who has the strong will and slightly harsh edge of an adopted Bostonian, and Alison, who has the tender sensibilities and enormous ego of a coddled […]

CW Giveth, CW Taketh Away

We told you yesterday about CW’s early pickups for shows like "America’s Next Top Model" and "Everybody Loves Chris." What they of course didn’t mention was that at the same time they were sending out that press release, they were whacking 25-30 employees behind the scenes, including their entire comedy department. More reality shows are definitely coming down the pike for the fall, sez the Hollywood Reporter, especially since the non-renewal of pro wrestling will mean the network now has to find a low-cost Friday night programming lineup. What all this means for shows that didn’t get "early" renewals - notably our favorites "Reaper" (pictured) and "Aliens in America" - is not yet clear.
