(Begin pointless personal digression.) I have a soft spot for the semi-annual TV Week Critics Poll. (Read the story here and results here.) Back when the magazine was called Electronic Media, I used to be in the poll all the time, and I started talking to the people over there - we were all in Chicago at the time - and I ended up getting hired as assistant managing editor and getting a whole different look at the industry. While I worked there I ran the poll a couple of times, too, which gave me lots of time to talk to my critic friends who I only got to see on press tour otherwise. So this poll is like an old pal. (End pointless personal digression.)
But seriously, "Pushing Daisies" is better than "Mad Men"??? I don’t think so. Better than "House" or "The Office"?? Really? Uh, no.Ten Best Series1. Pushing […]

August 24th, 2007 — Anchorwoman
Thank you all for not watching! Wednesday night’s premiere of the heinous reality TV stunt "Anchorwoman" will also be the show’s last airing. After the bimbo-becomes-TV-news-anchor show earned a meager 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demo, Fox yanked it from the schedule, a joyous development first reported last night by Broadcasting & Cable. And in what has to be thought of as a well-deserved final indignity, "Anchorwoman" will be replaced for the remaining three weeks of its scheduled run with repeats of "Til’ Death," the anemic Brad Garrett sitcom. You can see the rest of "Anchorwoman" online, but given our warm feelings about it, you’ll just have to figure out where by yourself. Not everyone on the TV With MeeVee staff agreed with my low opinion of the "show," it must be noted. But thank you, America, for proving me right. High fives all around!

August 23rd, 2007 — Anchorwoman, Reality TV
"Anchorwoman" generated plenty of controversy, a lot of outraged denunciations, and a few positive reviews. Reactions to the show are all over the map, and they’re all over the TV blogs and media critic websites.
However, all that notoriety hasn’t given it much of a boost in ratings. According to Variety, it placed fifth in its time-slot, just ahead of a rerun of "America’s Next Top Model."
It was never intended to be a long-running production, but after last night’s ratings debacle, there’s already some speculation that the show may end even earlier.

August 23rd, 2007 — Anchorwoman, Reality TV
"Anchorwoman" has gotten an awful lot of bad press from journalistic types and TV critics, including this blog. Some of it is well-deserved. It’s certainly sad to see just how low TV news has sunk. On the other hand, it’s more entertaining to watch than reviews that quote Don Henley might indicate.
Put yourself in Annalisa Petralia’s shoes: You’ve spent years working as a journalist, starting at the bottom of the heap, researching and writing and presenting your own stories, telling yourself that competence and hard work will get you to the top. Every time you meet someone new, you have to explain that a TV news anchor doesn’t just read the teleprompter, that the job is way more than just a pretty face and a smile.
Then the boss comes in and says he’s going to replace you with a top-heavy bleach-blonde bimbo because they want to juice the ratings. […]

August 22nd, 2007 — Anchorwoman
Some critics have thrown up their hands and said that to rail against the smarmy hunk of junk that is Fox’s "Anchorwoman" is merely giving the cynical production exactly what it wants - publicity. Variety opines that the show, "is rather quaint, beginning from the supposition that most local news isn’t a joke already…" The Boston Globe says, "There’s just no point in outrage." Well, I beg to differ. People everywhere may deserve better than they get from their local TV news, but the people of Tyler, Texas, have not to my knowledge done anything to deserve such shabby treatment as they got from Fox and local station KYTX in service of "Anchorwoman," which begins tonight.
Aggressively shallow bikini model Lauren Jones (above left) was hired as the ratings-challenged station’s new anchor in what was planned from the beginning as a reality show. (Read an interview with Jones here.) Real journalists […]
