I was gearing up for some sort of deep-thinking post about Simon Cowell tonight. This was hour six of this year’s "American Idol," and there is definitely something going on with Simon. Something kindler and gentler. Something that says yes against his better judgment and only gets off a mildly sarcastic quip, not the kind of ego-destroying zinger to which we’ve become accustomed. That’s what I was going to write. But the Charleston auditions were so lame they flattened out the whole show.
Perhaps the only genuine Simon moment - which was, un-genuinely, shared with Randy and Paula - came when the judges said no to a guy whose wife gave birth during the two-day auditions.
